Just wondering how you all felt about this. A friend was asking me yesterday, since she is attending an evening wedding and asked the bride what would be appropriate to wear. The bride told her that she could just wear a black dress. I have always been against wearing black at a wedding, but I know it is becoming more acceptable. What do you all think?

Hmm, although the bride gave her the go-ahead, I personally wouldn't wear black to a wedding, even if it were in the dead of winter. There's just so many colors to choose from to have to do black at a wedding.

Yeah, I feel the same way. My friend is leaning towards wearing an eggplant type color because she also feels weird wearing black.

I wore black to the last wedding I went to, although when you phrase it as "wearing black to a wedding" it sound so morbid, subversive and inappropriate! I wore a knee-length crepe and tulle dress with quite an open square neckline and pintucked wide straps. Ugh - it sound terrible, like Carrie at the prom LOL but it's a very classic grecian shape and I had a really bright Marni belt on. I didn't feel out of place or under-dressed... or like a widow!
If your friend has a nice black dress already, she should wear it. She'll be comfortable and look chic. If she wants to buy something new, she should definitely try a bright colour - mauve, green, yellow, floral - a wedding's the perfect place to splash out on colour, especially if she doesn't wear brights very often.

I also probably would not wear black at a wedding, but maybe with some colorful accessories/shoes she can make the black dress work?

I've done both black and white - of course always with the bride's permission As it's not like ALL black (like black tights w/ long sleeve dress), you show some skin (tastefully haha) and accessorize it well using colors other than black, I think it'd be fine.

I also grew up believing that you do not wear black to a wedding-but i've been to a ton of weddings, and a lot of people always wear black. In fact, for my cousins wedding most of my extended family had to travel. I went out and bought a very pretty salmon colored dress because 'you don't wear black to a wedding'. We got there, and EVERY female on our side of the family had packed a black dress but me-in salmon I stood out just a little. I still avoid black dresses, but i wore one recently for a wedding of one of my boyfriend's co-workers whom i didn't know and BF was not very helpful in finding out the dress code- so now my new rule is to wear black only to weddings of people i barely know or when i'm unsure of the theme/people/dress code/etc

At two recent weddings that I have been to, even the mothers of the groom were wearing black. And at my best friend's wedding, we wore black bridesmaids dresses. Wearing black to a wedding is no longer a faux pas. I don't think the color black matters so much as the style. The main thing is that you want to look festive, because it is a joyous occasion. You probably don't want to wear anything black that looks like corporate office attire, or anything that could be worn to a funeral. But a black cocktail dress, or other feminine little black dress can look perfectly chic and festive for a fall/winter or evening wedding. I wore a black silk dress with a full skirt and a ribbon tie at the neck to my brother-in-law's wedding.

Other brides were supposed to wear black wedding dresses. I also consider it during wedding, it depends on the concept and the style or tradition of the particular wedding celebration. However, it looks more neat and beautiful to wear white wedding dresses.

I was just at a wedding over the weekend, and was really surprised to see so many guests wearing black! I always thought it was a faux pas, and never considered wearing it, but I'm starting to think it's not such a big deal anymore.
