I have been looking at getting a pair of classic black pumps for a while, but haven't bought any yet, because the ones that will last a while are a bit much for my grad student budget. My question for when I do finally pull the plug, what is everyone's opinion on patent vs. regular leather for a pair of black pumps. Which is more versatile, lasts longer, is more comfortable, etc.? Thanks in advance of any advice!

I love the pop of patent leather though, though I think those may be a tad more tricky to upkeep.Plain leather is easier to take care of. I just think patent leather adds a little vintage/retro look to an outfit that I love, but may not be for everyone. The exception, of course, is Louboutins. Patent or plain, those are always fabulous.

Do what works for you and your wardrobe. If you don't wear patent and aren't used to it, then maybe go with the leather. It also depends on the shoe itself, the heel height, cut, etc. Some shoes just look better one way or the other. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the response petite premed! I ordered the ann taylor perfect pump during the 50% off sale. I got patent, because they didn't have regular leather in my size. We'll see how I like them and if I end up keeping.

I have a preference for black pumps made of plain leather instead of patent. IMO, patent is less comfortable, inflexible and tends to look cheaper and cut up my feet. But entirely up to you!

I absolutely love the look of patent leather, but I trip, kick, scuff, and drag my feet all over the place and brand new shoes inevitably look awful within a week. I find that plain leather holds up better for work and shows less damage (LOL, the leather shows some "character" instead).
