question--- a few years ago i had a theory black blazer tailored. the tailor took it in way too much at the waist. the blazer looks fine unbuttoned and/or over a shell... but buttoned over a dress shirt = hot mess. so tight.
because the sides were taken in when it was originally tailored, it's highly unlikely another tailor would be able to "let it out," right?

Depends on whether or not the original tailor left any fabric for lee-way when they took it in. If you can peak under the lining you might be able to see if there's any extra fabric at the seam. If not, I've heard of tailors adding fabric to garments to let them out, but I doubt this can look very clean, or they might have a hard time matching the fabric exactly. If it really bothers you, maybe you can get creative and ask your tailor about adding ruching or a waistband to the area to allow for extra fabric, but also give it a stylistic element to cover up the fact that there's added fabric there? Otherwise, If you can just wear it unbuttoned and have it look fantastic, that's not so bad of a thing. I prefer the look of blazer jackets unbuttoned anyways. =)

Hi tokvoj, A Theory SA recommended Alteration Concept in NYC, who seems to have pretty good reviews on Yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/alteration-concept-manhattan Common complaint is that they're more pricey and are often late, but first-timer gets a 10% discount by mentioning Yelp. The Theory SA specifically recommended them to me because they've worked with Theory suiting materials before and customers were happy with the result. I haven't made the trip yet, so will have to update later for a personal review.
